    Default Possible Apple Search Engine

    Of course this does not apply to the geeks who inhabit these pages but I suspect that many Mac users do not know that OS X Safari's default search engine is Google when OS X is installed [Safari is not a search engine]. Any most users likely do not care. It doesn't matter to most users if Apple uses Google, Bing, Yahoo or anything else. You just write in the Safari URL bar whatever you are looking for, click and away you go. And yes I know that you can change the default to any of those three via Safari's preferences. But I also bet many Mac users don't know that either.

    A couple of interesting items surfaced in the last week which may have passed you by. Firstly the resurgent Yahoo is seeking to have Apple replace the mobile default Safari search engine with Yahoo instead of Google. Maybe that does not matter to you, but it certainly matters to Yahoo. Not that I have any feelings for Yahoo; it has not made a profit for several years now.

    Any such change would certainly matter to Google and Apple in the mega tech business world. Remember that Jobs once vowed to destroy Google. With that last thought in mind see these two articles.

    Those articles seemingly point to Apple developing its own search engine. The ramifications of that are mind boggling, in the tech world anyway.

    Anybody have any insight?

    The issue may be for Apple that. Search engines like maps are not something you can dabble in. They are a full time effort I am not sure hey could bring anything new to the table that the big boys don't already.

    Also I suspect users would soon care as Google still delivers the best search results and any change of the default and users finding search less useful, would soon bite Apple.

    For mind Apple is best at hardware and software and search is best left to the experts and Google is best left as the default.

    I have been considering this for a while now; Apple developing their own search engine.

    It seems a natural progression from Maps, and I'm sure they have the resources to put into such a task.

    Of course, only time will tell.

    Isn't yahoo search bing anyway?there are a few specialised search features to Yahoo, but for general search Apple would just do bing if it went from google.

    apple indeed might be thinking of its own search, but I think this yahoo story got a bit muddled and it might really be some kind of specialised product for Siri on iOS.

    I think you're seriously underestimating the effort required for search.

    money doesn't solve problems. talent does and unfortunately, you can't just buy talent. you breed it.

    That's what I was implying when I mentioned the introduction of Maps - though I'm not saying that they're anywhere near being ready.
