Default Safari not downloading .zip & .dmg files (Solved)

    Hi,

Something I noticed only after installing SL (but I can't be sure it wasn't happening before) was that when I click on a link to download a file that has .zip extension, Safari will open a new window and load the address but will not download the actual file. Refreshing the page doesn't do anything.

I have to specify 'Download linked file to...' for the download to work. Is there a setting I have inadvertently clicked that would cause this? Is it normal but I have just never noticed...? It seems to only be .zip files.

I've linked a screen recording just to show what I mean. I just noticed this when going to download a weather widget.

    Thanks.

Works fine here. I just tested an iStat Pro download:

Yeah, Reset a couple of times.

The link you give there does the same thing for me.

    Strange.

I only installed SL this morning, but I have the same problem with both zips and dmgs. It displays the zip/dmg address in the address bar but does nothing displaying a blank screen (Within safari). If you 'Save as' from here it gives the following error message: "The document "nnnnn.zip" could not be exported as "nnnnn.zip".

I know this goes without saying (but I have to ask), you have checked the "downloads" folder, right…?

Not trying to be smart, I just thought the question should be asked…

Sure did. It's a fair enough question though.

i'm having the same problem. updated to SL, using safari 4.0. it just started happening randomly yesterday. when i link to a zip file, it tries to load the zip (the address for the zip shows up in the address bar.)

furthermore, i'm having problems opening pdf's within safari. a new tab will open up, the status bar at the bottom will show loading (1 of 2 for example) and the screen will be dark grey. it'll finish loading, but nothing will show.

anyone have any idea what is going on?

Same problem for me, I use Alt + Enter in the address bar and it starts downloading, rather annoying for other files though, its as if its trying to open it in the browser.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing it. Shame we can't figure out what's causing it. Can we confirm if it is just SL with Safari 4.0 or Leopard also?

Any Leopard users with 4.0 care to comment?

    Default Found a fix

I can confirm the issue started with Snow Leopard.

The problem was with Speed Download, which is not ready for SL.

In Speed Download, turn off Safari Integration by checking "Completely disable browser plugin for Safari".

Then remove the Speed Download plugin located here: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins

    Hope this helps.

    Default No Speed Download Here

I am pretty sure I do not have Speed Download. Did a full search just in case, and found no such plug-in. But I have been having this problem since installing Snow Leopard and Safari 4.

The Opt-Return trick does seem to be a good work-around, though.

    Default Not just Snow Leopard

FWIW, I'm experiencing roughly the same thing on Leopard. For me it started with one of the Safari updates, and has been behaving in this annoying fashion for a while. I get the same gray/blank screen when I try to initiate a download, but, curiously, my download actually does take place. I just have to hit back to return to the page that initiated the download and I'm good to go, so it's only an annoyance, but it sure is getting tiresome. I am using Speed Download, so maybe that's the source of the problem, but I see it on both a MacBook Pro running 10.6.x and an aging PowerPC Mac Pro running 10.5.x.

    Question Any Solution?

I have the same exact problem, Safari + Snow Leopard doesn't download. I also found the same problem with Firefox, Chrome and Wyzo (they do not download as well).

Was there any solution to this?

    Thank you - Jim

Wow I only stumbled upon this resurrection by chance as I wandered the forums.

I found the problem was caused by Speed Download, too. A quick spotlight search and delete of the library plugin fixed all the problems. The problem had spread to chrome, opera and firefox.

    Well rid of that plugin.

    Thanks,
