Default Apple Online store delivery fail

Just thought I'd put this up as a community alert to those who are considering buying from the Online store.

Recently my brother placed an order for a Macbook Air with the Apple Educational Store.
The item was paid for and a scheduled delivery date was given (Friday 10/02/2012).
As no one was to be home that day, my brother decided to take the day off work to wait for the item.
Subsequently TNT delivered it to a shop a couple of doors down from me. But obviously he waited around for nothing.
TNT washed their hands of the matter because they said "item is delivered, we have fulfilled our obligation"
Apple are saying, your fault for waiting around the whole day, if you want you can return the item, and if the item is indeed damaged, its your word against theirs, as the shop had "signed" for it in "good condition". For the record, the item was not even sent in a brown packaging box, but just in the retail box, presumedly amongst the other parcels. Now the retail box shows slight indents indicating that it could have been mishandled.

I tried to work all of this out? Is the item damaged? Why would TNT deliver it to the wrong address? Or was the store listed as a drop off point? If the box only has slight indents and nothing is wrong with the macbook then why do you need to return it?

Apple online have always been marvellous with my stuff, but the TNT driver here is a shocker, but that's not Apples fault, it's TNT's for hiring a bloke who won't even come in your gate and just leaves a note in the letterbox, caught him doing it twice while I was home.

Right now the item is not damaged. But im not sure if the drop impact was large enough to harm the display. I have knocked a LCD controller loose before (13" MBP) by having some moron tap the screen with his artline marker.

The driver was an outright idiot. he didnt even read the delivery note. it clearly had my address. and not the shops (two doors down). Then again, TNT told us to take it up with apple, as they are the "customer".

Not to call you a lier, but I find your story a little hard to believe. How did you know where they delivered it? I'd say the shop it was delivered to opened the box to see what it was and chucked everything other then the mac. Theres no way apple/schenker would have sent your mac without appropriate packaging and in poor condition.

Thats not necessarily his fault, TNT have some pretty shocking policies regarding deliveries. ( I drive a b double for them)

No worries if you find my "story" abit fishy. I actually encourage reading with a pinch of salt

According to my brother (not mine, I had my own things to do!), he got sick of waiting, and left it to about 1730 of which i said to him it aint coming today for sure, and probably some delay from TNT, and to wait for delivery on monday.

He called up TNT, gave his tracking ID (which he had been tracking since thursday night, woke up friday morning to find it "Delivered in Full" at 0900hr), they told him that it was delivered, and asked what was he on about. They chucked him on hold for abit, and told him to "check" an address two doors away, as the driver mistook our address. When he went in, he calmly asked if there was a MBA delivered today, of which the lady boss said yes, and that she would have to go find it.

According to him, it was just the retail box, and no brown outer box which I find abit hard to believe too. Afterall when i bought my mac from myer a few years ago, they arrived in the brown box. I assumed packaging would be more or less the same.

I agree its highly possible that the shop binned the outer box. funnily enough, the delivery con note was correct. correct address, correct recipient name, etc. so it is clearly a driver error.

Typical of the damned poor quality carriers we have in this country. Had Smart Send deliver a Dual Core G5 a couple of years ago. Arrived at destination smashed into five pieces. Carrier denied any responsibility claiming it was delivered in 'okay' condition and as noe one was home they left it at the door

Delivery address was a nursery owned by the purchaser who was in attendance and saw the driver dump it at the front gate and sprint back to the truck. Complaints by he and me resulted in .. absolutely nothing bastards would not meet insurance claim sticking to their god damned lies about 'okay' delivery.

Chances are you'll probably be ok. When I got my MacBook I was horrified to discover that TNT had passed the machine onto a local contractor, who had put the machine in the back of his truck with some farm machinery. There was a gaping hole in the side of the box. I unboxed it, expecting the worst. I ran AHT on it, just to confirm that everything was ok...4, nearly 5 years on its still yet to have any issues.

I went to the Apple store in Brisbane last week chasing a brown outer box and was told that they aren't used anymore. Just the retail packaging nowadays to save money.

How do you think delicate items get to a shop? Much the same way as to your house.

At least if you have any trouble you can go straight back to the shop instead of phoning around to sort out the problem.

Going to the shop isn't an option for some people though (like me) I live in a little country town, I have had nothing but good from my local Mac delivery guy and as of a couple of weeks ago they still deliver in brown outer boxes for everything.

I think the shop opened it too and thought all their xmas's came at once!!!!

It is his fault I think because our last TNT driver was awesome, and when the Local freight company brings my mac stuff he is awesome. Being in a little town and having lots of deliveries you really get to know the drivers well. Even by name, socially and present time at xmas :-)

A rather dumb idea really...the outer box provides extra protection, in the event that machines are damaged, replacing an entire smashed machine is going to cost much, much, much more than double boxing them.

if i tell you the shop name, i might as well just paste my address in a public forum, hence the generic name.

as for whether i know them, yes i do. also had some disagreements with them when they started to empty some rubbish in the vacant land (a few years ago before the block was developed)

i'm not sure why you think it is my fault. My fault for having an incompetent driver not know how to read? And a dishonest shop who signed for something that is clearly isnt theirs?

I had a quote above that statement. I wasn't saying it was your fault. I was talking about my delivery driver.

I think the shop has more to do with this mess than the fail of the apple online delivery service. Oh and your driver for taking it to the shop in the first place.

Gotcha now. My bad for not reading the quote in full.

Either way it's not my problem to be chasing up deliveries.

I paid apple, my contract is with apple and apple only. Apple contracted TNT and they can be responsible for working with TNT to resolve the matter.

While logical this is all TNT's fault yeah unfortunately these is going to be a case of companies passing the blame between each other. One of the most frustrating parts of life that is completely unnecessary.

I am now very worried that they aren't packaging their products properly just to cheap out a little. Last thing I got delivered was a Mac mini but anything more than that without protection and I'm just going to skip on it. I will have to look into this a little more.
