Don't know which Mac to buy? Got really simple, "Help I'm new to the Mac" related questions? Post them here. If you're buying a new Mac, please don't forget how we helped you and buy it from the Apple online store using this link to support this site.
Hey everyone...
I must say, I'm very annoyed with apple at the moment...
You see, I had planned on buying a new MacBook Pro after OS X Lion was released since at the moment I have to borrow my friends' to use for development....
Problem: The new iMac has been released... The cheapest iMac is the same price as the cheapest MacBook Pro, so price doesn't change anything...
However the iMac has a larger HDD, faster CPU, and better GPU compared to the MacBook Pro, but the MacBook Pro is obviously more portable....
I have no idea what I should end up doing...
I am possibly going to university next year, meaning a laptop would be a good investment... I am (thinking like a crazy man) considering using my iPhone instead of a laptop if I get the iMac... I hear you can pair the wireless keyboard (that comes with the iMac) with an iPhone anyway... Who cares if I have a small screen, right? I can still type up my notes etc, I would just be missing a few apps.... :/
Anyway, what do you guys think? I know you probably don't care what I do, and don't really know my lifestyle well enough to make a full recommendation, but what do you guys think of MacBook Pro's vs iMacs in general?
Nick
iMac unless you have enough use for a laptop in particular. Sounds like you don't to me.
Mmm, thing is I have a gaming PC which does all my desktop needs... Basically the only reason I want a Mac is for XCode... So I don't really need either specifically... :/
MacBook pro and a display adapter, use the display of your pc with your macbook pro.

For me I'd go the iMac, this coming from a guy who just got a new 2011 MacBook Pro. Love it to bits, but the iPad kinda fills that portability void. Regardless, you'll be happy with either I think. Can not fault my 09 iMac, or this new MacBook Pro.
Good luck![]()
Apple iMac 21.5" Apple MacBook Pro 15.4" Apple iPad 2 32GB WiFi Apple iPhone 4 32GB Apple iPod classic 5th Gen 32GB Apple iPod nano 6th Gen 8GB
MY10 Ford Fiesta Zetec 'S' 3-Door Hatch in Frozen White
This sounds like a great option. Gives you the big screen that would be great to have at home (even if you don't have a large display the non-apple ones are getting pretty cheap), and also the option if you go somewhere and would like to/need to work on an app.
And being at uni right now, there's no way i'd use my iPhone as my main note taking device. Just wouldn't work for me, and I don't think many people could make it work. iPad would be a possibility, but it's still nowhere near as convenient as having a laptop is.
OK, MacBook Pro it is.... Portability is fairly helpful... Especially with uni potentially coming up...

I would recommend waiting and getting a TB port equipped MBA.
Why?
You already have a desktop PC for your needs at home. And the MBA is lighter then the MBP. And has SSD. Smaller HD size yes but you won't need 500GB just for some University note taking. And depending on which model you get it could be cheaper then the MBP. And you don't need this computer now cause you said you are planing to study next year.
Trying to type lots of text into an iphone would get tedious and annoying pretty fast I think. It's nice for sms. But trying to note take a 1-2 hour lecture with an iphone? I don't think that'd a good idea.

I'm with the8thark.
A Thunderbolt equipped Macbook Air can be connected to whatever large monitor you fancy and will give both the real estate on your desktop and the portability you need as a student.
I wouldn't worry too much about waiting for Lion. From some reports it may be something you might want to skip.
I'd go with the MacBook Pro. I have a 2011 13" i5 MacBook Pro and love it. Although the Air is a good choice as well if you don't need an optical drive, or don't mind carrying around an external SuperDrive.
I'd go the pro, it's available now and who knows when there will be a new macbook air and whether it has thunderbolt.
