Default Can Windows Safari Open Archived Apple Safari Web Pages?

I have a number of archived Safari web pages that I need to send to someone to view. Most likely they will not have an Apple computer nor even use the Safari browser and for this reason I will have to try and archive the same web pages in Internet Explorer, but my question is if they do have Safari for Windows installed will they be able to view my web pages archived with Apple Safari?

Also is there some way to view archived Safari web pages without having Safari installed or is there some way to get Internet Explorer to open them? I tried opening my Safari web pages with Internet Explorer, but the Internet Explorer option is blanked out when I go to 'Open With' and try to change Safari (default) to Internet Explorer.

Open them, then resave them as PDFs on your mac. Then the PC user will be able to view them.

The PC version of Safari cannot open these archive files.

I just tested it with the latest version of Safari on both platforms.

This seems a bit silly to me. Shouldn't there be some kind of universal web page file format by now so that anyone can open and properly view any saved web site no matter what browser it was saved in or what browser is being used to view the saved web site?

If all web sites use HTML then why can't Microsoft Internet Explorer open Apple Safari archived web site files or why can't Windows Safari open Apple Safari archived web site files or why can't Apple Safari open Firefox archived web site files, etc?

I just remembered something. I made an XHTML file and it couldn't open it IE 6.

Works fine under Firefox and Safari though.

I'd probably just PDF the pages or Save As... somehow. It usually works for me.

Why try to change the default application as that only applies to the local computer anyway? When you tried "Open with" you may have failed to notice it also said "Recommended applications" and gives you the option of "All applications" at which point you could have selected "Open with" then "All applications" and finally "Internet Explorer". Try it as an experiment.

Mac Safari doesn't save the folder with all the images. The page is thus text only (with lots of missing page thingys).

What Apple should do is make the .webarchive format like the .pages and .keynote formats, which is a folder that contains the necessary files inside. Just in the case of a webarchive, all it would need would be the original .html file and the images folder inside it. Something more open and cross-platform... and easy to use.

Webarchives also open in Textedit btw. Just a point of interest.

I tried it and unfortunately it appears not to work. The blue progress bar starts and then never progresses. I could leave it there all night and it will never load anything in.

Yes this is what I meant - a more open or cross platform format so that others would be able to open and view archived web site files saved with Safari (or any browser for that matter) no matter what the platform or browser being used ie a standardised 'web archive' file format.

I tried opening one of my archived web sites with 'Text Edit' and it opens and all the content is there and the links work, though its not really ideal (I'm guessing Microsoft Word may be able to do the same though?)

Anyway I will try and convert my archived web sites to PDF's and see what the result is.

try an application called paparazzi (http://www.derailer.org/paparazzi/), it allows you to convert any webpage into a JPG, PNG, etc, it also supports safari's "web archive" format. Just drag the webarchive file onto paparazzi's icon, it will then allow you to save the archive out as a PNG or JPG file which can be viewed on anything (even iPods / iPhones).

You can extract Safari Web Archives (they are basically binary encoded plist files) in to a folder structure using WebArchive Folderizer or WebArchiveExtractor. You could then compress the folder that contains the result and send it for the PC User to extract and use with any appropriate web browser.
