This was certainly unexpected. I had to read the headline twice to make sure it wasn't an early April Fool's joke.

Apple is pumping the Mac OS full of iOS steroids and cementing social media integration. Some of my Mac using friends have now decided to skip OS 10.7 Lion in favor of OS 10.8 ML. The winter release being one of the deciding factors.

Tried Messages Beta and it works. I'm also assuming that Core 2 Duo CPUs will be the minimum hardware requirement to run ML.

    um, ok, like, wow.
A one-major-update-per-year development schedule, explains why Lion was $30, short shelf-life.

signed, app store apps only. This one worries me, a little. No more superduper...

Thought it was going to be a scoopertino thing, where did that came from?!?!?! Looks VERY iOS like, oh and one more thing... iMessage is available today.

It also explains why Lion is still buggy as all hell.

That's the default setting, but you can turn Gatekeeper off to allow all apps. Also, even with the default turned on you can right click and run an unsigned app.

I reckon the features they are bringing over from iOS are better than the ones from lion, so i'm looking forward to it. Well i was until i found out it wound run on my white macbook. I JUST MAXED THE RAM AND PUT A NEW HARDDRIVE IN. I thought that 10.8 would support it. End of rant

Oh dear. I decided to uninstall and start over with a different apple id (seems like the old one wont work for this) and now the mbp isnt rebooting. Got the wheel, spin spin spin.

[edit] that was posted from tapatalk. Decided to bite the bullet and use the power button to get out. Seems to have worked ok, now will reinstall messages and see if I can add my current me.com address. The mac.com address was only for itunes, i dont know why i thought it would be ok for messages (because its fine for ichat, maybe) anyway, i couldnt send from that.

That is an option in gatekeeper, you can still choose to install apps from anywhere.

June/July used to be iphone time, too. Maybe the iPad will be delayed until then and they will have a release-fest.

Well there's talk that shipments of the new Intel chipsets may be delayed until then, so that might make a lot of sense. Unless the delays are because Apple's gone and bought up all their stock for the new Macbooks.

Looks good...I especially like AirPlay Mirroring...maybe, just maybe, I'll finally have a use for an AppleTV. Bugger that my Late 2007 MacBook isn't supported though...I know its getting long in the tooth and all, but I was still hoping for at least another 12 months before they'd kill it off.

Well would you look at that. Mountain Lion's Safari 5.2 goes all Chrome on us with a combined URL/Search bar.

Back to iChat for now. Hopefully Apple gets over their obsessiveness and puts status dots in the contact list in Messages. It's stupid to have to show the buddy list alongside the already huge window, or individually click each contact to see if they are online.

Also need phone number Caller ID for sending messages. Perhaps I'm asking for too much, but I wont be using iMessage on iPad or OS X unless this is implemented.

All I'll ever use Messages for is messaging an iOS device. Every other IM protocol I use (except Skype) is loaded up in my Adium and I can't see myself ever leaving Adium - I love it too much!
