Discussion & troubleshooting on iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini and older Macs.
Looking to upgrade the RAM in a 1.83 C2D white iMac (currently 1GB).
Just wanted to check in and see what is back compatible. I will likely get 2x2GB, even though only 3GB will be used by the system.
Anyone?
I'm 99.5% certain that this iMac is the one with integrated graphics and it is rather hobbled in the RAM department. The best you can do is upgrade to 2GB (2x1GB) total. Only the models with the beefier processor could go up to 3GB/4GB. Options for a single 1GB module or 2x1GB kit module are here:

Have a look at System Profiler, which you can access directly from the Utilities folder (Shift+Cmd+U when in Finder) or by clicking on About this Mac from the Apple Menu and then clicking on the More Info… button. This will tell you exactly what model your iMac is - the Model Identifier is what you want.
Once you have that you can check it out with MacTracker, which will tell you how much RAM your machine will take.
From the info you've provided, yours sounds like the iMac5,2, which will only take 2GB - 2 X 1GB - as Rod says.
Thanks RodB and Soulman. It is the iMac 5,2. I checked on everymac and thought it would handle the 3 of 4GB (I just realized it already has 2GB in it).
I am considering installing Lion on it...
