Default Trouble with a clean installof OS Panther

I have a problem with a clean install in an iMac G4. I wished to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS Panther, which I had done successfully a number of times before. The installer is version 2.0 (83)

The computer accepted the first disk and prompted to insert the second. This was done. The computer refused to recognise the disk and the window froze. All I can do with the computer is zoom and view the installer log as well as a print preview of the installer log PDF. Viewing the PDF allows other functions of the top tool bar to display information, but not to initiate any function of the computer.

How do I get the computer working again? Any suggestions, anyone?

does the installer log show anything that might indicate where the issue is?

get disk 2 out, eject it.

    Start again.
Boot the iMac from disk 1
    CMD+C or CMD+OPTION

do you have a back up of the previous install?

Try making a duplicate of your Panther CDs - on another computer. They do tend to wear out. Or, try Tiger 10.4 which your iMac wll handle quite nicely (and Leopard 10.5 if you have 1.5GB+ RAM)
