Discussion & troubleshooting on iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini and older Macs.
G'day Mactalk,
It seems once again I need to turn to this great forum for advice. My newly acquired Powermac G4 "AGP" has the ATI Rage 128 Pro AGP2x card with 16MB RAM. I need to be able to run two monitors with this card, one mirroring the other. Firstly, is this possible? I've read somewhere that this card doesn't support dual-monitors, but I want to confirm that here.
Secondly, does anyone know exactly which type DVI this is:

That's the card I have and I can't seem to find the name for that DVI connection. It's like a DVI-D, but those two vertical slots are throwing me.
Last question (I promise!), if I were to upgrade the card in this machine, what is the best AGP card for a Powermac G4? This machine will be processing some gigantic images, and I don't want the computer to crash every time it does.
Any input would be highly appreciated!
Cheers
jars, that picture doesn't show whether it has a PCI or AGP connector, unfortunately. IIRC those powermacs only have 2x AGP. Someone may have an old Apple version of one of the ATI Radeon cards or the old NVidia GeForce one which was the top-of-the-line card at one stage. You don't want another Rage card. There is also a PCI version of the Radeon. I suggest posting a WTB here for a card compatible with your machine. There may be someone with the official Mac ones or a PC version that has already been flashed to work with a G4.
Thanks for replying currawong. I've determined that this is definitely the AGP 2x version. I've actually got a WTB thread open, but haven't attracted too much interest as of yet. I'd say my best bet is off ebay, possibly in the states, I just don't know which card is compatible. I'm dealing with images that are over a gigapixel each, so the 16MB RAM on the Rage 128 Pro just isn't anywhere near enough.
Hate to say it, but if you're dealing with gigapixel+ images, it might be time to start thinking about a new machine.
Haha don't worry, this isn't my main machine. Unfortunately I'm using a high-end drum scanner for film, and it only really works on OS9 and obviously the Powermac G4 towers were the last models capable of booting into OS9.
Try this seller in Hong Kong.
He should have something to suit.
Has been a reliable seller for me.
There's a couple of video cards on this page: Apple Bits Online Store
Not cheap though, both are about $150.
Thanks guys, I'll check them out![]()
Hi jars121
I typed a post last night but the site went down and it got lost. You need to be absolutely sure which model G4 you have (Sawtooth, Gigabit Ethernet or Digital Audio) because some graphics cards will work in some of these models but not others, especially under OS 9. This may help you: Power Mac Index.
I'm trying to get time to sort through all my spare stuff to see what I have...
Ahh thanks rpjallan. Mac really played around with the different version of the G4, it was so much easier upgrading my Quad G5![]()
And if you wanted something quite a bit faster to help process those images, some of the dual 1.0 and 1.25GHz machines were still able to boot into OS9.
Graphic cards for those models are a bit more readily available.
The other thing too is that if you can't find a card that suits dual monitor out then maybe one AGP card and another PCI card may be better although probably too expensive for two.
Like midnight_e , I've also bought from that ebay seller and purchased an nVidia 6200 256mb card for my older Sawtooth which has worked fine for five years. One just like this except I got him to put a fan on mine ...

Just check which connections your monitors have and the resolutions the card needs to push out for them.

Lotsa Macs - PM's , G3's , G4's & Powerbooks - Love 'em

The first Macs that wouldn't boot OS9 are the USB 2.0/FW800 Mirrored Drive Door models. The first MDD (Mirrored Drive Door) models, however, came with Mac OS 9.2.2. If you find one, you may need the original disks for them, I don't remember.
Thanks everyone, I knew I could count on Mactalk![]()
